Retrofitting: The Principles

The New Era in Home Design

Climate Change is no longer a distant theory - it’s shaping every aspect of how we live, build and plan for the future.  In response, the global building community has been exploring smarter, more sustainable ways to create homes.

Drawing inspiration from the early passive design thinking of iconic American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the first modern Passivhaus concept home was built in Darmstadt, Germany in 1991 by physicist Dr. Wolfgang Feist almost 100 years after Lloyd Wright’s theories. This groundbreaking project launched a new era of performance-based building.

More than three decades of real-world testing have shown that ultra-low energy homes aren’t just achievable—they’re cost-effective, comfortable, resilient to extreme weathers and built to last.

Across the world, a new wave of architectural innovation is reshaping how we design and build our homes and workplaces.  The images above (courtesy of Pinterest.com) showcase just a glimpse of the global response to climate change and the demands of modern living.

Architects in every continent are moving beyond their traditional styles and construction methods, embracing sustainable, climate-resilient designs whilst creating spaces that are not only visually striking but also in harmony with the environment.  Green roofs, smart building orientation, expansive full-height glazing and strategic shading are just some of the techniques used to optimise energy efficiency and comfort, make the most of natural daylight and stay comfortable year-round. Designs provide a flexible canvas for personal style whilst benefiting from future-focused performance.

Using contemporary materials with innovative thinking, today’s homes are being built not just for the here and now, but for the world of tomorrow and our future generations.
